Okay.
First off,
Darkspore =/= Spore. At all. The only similarity between the two is the editor, and that's not all that similar either.

Here are some people's feelings about the game:

"Darkspore's a great game limits make it a tad boring but it could change quite a bit when it comes out"

"Far too easy"

"Spore is a completely different game, this just borrows from it"

"Completely different genre, you can't compare this"

"It can't be compared, the only thing similar are the creature editors"

"Darkspore is what I wanted Spore to be"

And I thought it was pretty cool.
Graphics are solid. Way huge improvement over Spore, and generally quite impressive.
The Action/RTS (I can't say it's either, it's more of a hybrid of both) gameplay is good, if a little easy.
So I thought to myself: Well, this is already looking like a good sequel.
Then I got to the creature editor.
BOOM.
I was hit right in the face with the anti-creativity bomb.

See, in the creature editor you can position parts and such just like in Spore, but it's a little different.
A) You can't change any part of your creature's physical anatomy, such as arms, mouth, legs, etc.
B) You have five categories of parts, each of which give abilities.
C) You can't have more than one part in each of the categories.
D) You can only change some of the HIGHLIGHTS of your creature's color. Their main color remains the same.

I sat there for a full 30 seconds, realizing that the Spore creature creator - one of the saving graces of Spore, mind you - had been completely bastardized.
It had the same buttons, but every fricking part of it that had made Spore into a great creativity tool was gone.


Ultimately, here's what I got from my first impressions.
1) Darkspore looks and sounds much better than regular Spore
2) Though a little corny and not particularly engaging, the Darkspore story is decent enough
3) Darkspore's game engine for battle is far superior to that in GA.
4) Some of the parts in Darkspore are well modeled.
5) Darkspore does not encourage creativity.


Final conclusion?

Is it a bad game? No.
Is it a forgettable game? Oh hell yes.

Nothing all that inspiring about the game. It's got a fairly dry story, no great saving grace, and if it doesn't change much, it's gonna hit the market like a falling whale. Or pot of petunias, take your pick.

Stick with Spore and wait for the modders to can extract the cool textures, audio, and models out of the Darkspore packages.
(below is a screenshot of the editor. For the record, I can only change the size and shape of the guns, the size of the feet, that little tiny bump on the front and the two handles on either side of the glass canopy.)

We're working with it now. We found the creation .pngs and stuff.

I want to put spore into that game.

spores gameplay was crap.

gameplay = just as important as the editor.

we get the editor into there, it's amazing.
