Murphy's law at its finest

I temporarily disabled Kaspersky because it makes Spore lag like hell. I forgot to turn it back on when I quit the game. Then I went to watch a Livestream. Within minutes my computer caught this hellspawn
http://progssecurityblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/remove-system-repair-virus.html
I tried following instructions to remove it, which involved a reboot. My computer could not boot up because of the damage that thing caused. So I backed up my personal files, then reformatted, since not even a recovery disc could fix the poor thing. The system recovery tool consistently crashes at 90%, so some of my files are lost forever.
EDIT: Whoops, turns out it DID save a lot of my personal files; they are just hidden because of the jackoff virus. Got to fix that. I still wonder about the 10% after the crash point, though.

That's why I love the antiviruses that have the option to only disable the AV protection for a set amount of time. Vipre is one; you just tell it to turn off for an hour or two, and it does the rest. AVG can do it, but it's a ton more fiddly. Mind you, Vipre is pay-only, though.

I'd like to get Vipre, since Kaspersky has failed me twice. For now, Avira is okay as a temporary stand-in.
I've got most of my old programs back in my computer, but my SAI files are gone forever. Those could not be backed up. There is a reason why I hate unique extensions...

Yeah... I recommend Vipre, actually; I got a 6-month full trial from an APC magazine disc, and it ran out a couple weeks ago, forcing me to install AVG again (I don't have the money for high-end antivirus like Vipre). Even so, it's one of the really good ones.

I don't even use antivirus software.. I just run regular scans using
Malwarebytes
.
But if you're set on having active protection, you should use
Microsoft Security Essentials (free)
or
ESET NOD32 (paid)
.
Kaspersky is super-paranoid, Avira is BUY ME BUY ME BUY ME, AVG is.. bulky and doesn't work well, generally

I'm surprised nobody has recommended AVG yet. It's pretty good and well-known.

I suggest MSE if you're running Windows. It's free and it hasn't failed me yet.
Plus, you really need antivirus software even if it's really crappy.

Spyware Doctor.
If you can afford it, it works well and doesn't lag the computer.
But, for some reason, the 2012 version's full scans take ages. No idea why... Maybe that's just us, but still, 24 hours >.>
At least it works well.

No. No. NO! Spyware doctor is one of the MOST CONFLICTING programs I've ever used. It picks fight with everything else. Even after I uninstalled other antivirus on my PC, IT STILL MAKES MY PC FREEZES!

This 'Spyware Doctor' has a suspiciously malware-sounding name

Actually, it's okay except for the fact that it's unstable.

Unstable? Blimey, what's on your computer that's causing that?
It's not like that at all for us. No conflictions or anything...
And we've had no freezes or anything because of it. So, either we're just lucky, you're just unlucky, or you have some programs that cause it to screw up that we don't have. Or you tinkered around with a wrong setting xD
